The Tear film is composed of 3 layers: lipid, aqueous, and mucous . When there is an imbalance of 1 or more layers you will begin to experience ocular surface disruptions such as redness, increased stringy mucous, sandy gritty sensation, increased watery eyes or dryness. These symptoms depend on which layer or layers are affected.Factors affecting the tear film:

Helpful daily practices for individuals struggling with dry eye:
Remember the “20/20/20 Rule”: When using screen devices such as laptops, Ipads, phones, TVs
take a 20 second break every 20 minutes and look at something 20 feet away
Hydrate! Dehydration can cause dry eye symptoms worsen
Avoid direct fan and wind exposure to the face and eye areas, especially at night
Avoid using OTC eye drops and “get the red out” drops containing harsh preservatives
Use preservative free OTC eye drops as needed based on your eye doctor recommendations
Always see your eye doctor if there is any ocular discomfort or any symptoms of pain
